Learn to play music in a concert band setting—even with no musical experience!

The Guelph Youth Music Centre is thrilled to welcome the New Horizons Music Program to its facility.  New Horizons provides an entry point to music for adults who have little or no musical experience, or who have been musically inactive for a long period.  Active participation in music can fill important needs for adults, such as the need for challenging intellectual activity, the need to be a contributing member of a group or the need to have exciting events in the future, to name a few.

We rehearse on Thursday mornings from 9:30 until 11:45 at the Guelph Youth Music Centre. The first part of the rehearsal is spent in “master classes” for small group, specialized instruction. The next part of the rehearsal is spent in full band and learning new repertoire.

There are two sessions per year, one in the Fall and one in the Spring, each running for 12 weeks. Beginning classes are offered in each session and there are at present two levels of ensembles – a beginning and an intermediate. The intent is that everyone finds their comfort zone and develops at a rate comfortable for them.

Getting Started

The first step is to contact the directors of Guelph New Horizons.  They will be able to answer all your questions and assist in choosing and finding an instrument that is right for you.  It could be one you played years ago—or one that has a particular sound or look that appeals to you.  When selecting an instrument, keep in mind that in a very small number of cases, physical characteristics may indicate that a particular instrument will be relatively easy or difficult to play.  Options can be discussed with the director.
